CNC Design

CNC Design

Geometry designed for efficient, accurately machined parts.

Overview

Machined parts are priced largely on setup count, tool access and tolerance, not just material and time in the spindle. A design that ignores this can be functionally fine but needlessly expensive to cut.

We design and review geometry for CNC machining with those cost drivers in mind: minimizing unnecessary setups, avoiding deep narrow features that need special tooling, specifying tolerances only where they matter, and flagging features that will be difficult or impossible to machine as drawn.

Useful both for new parts and for reviewing an existing design that came back from a machine shop with unexpected cost or a manufacturability question.

Who this is for

  • Teams designing parts intended for CNC production
  • Companies whose machined-part quotes are higher than expected
  • Anyone converting a 3D-printed prototype into a machined production part

Process

01

Process & material fit

Confirm machine type, material and expected tolerance requirements.

02

Setup-aware design

Design or revise geometry to minimize setups and tool-access issues.

03

Tolerance targeting

Apply tight tolerances only where function requires them.

FAQ

Can you help pick between 3-axis and 5-axis machining?

Yes — we'll design toward the simplest process that meets your geometry and tolerance requirements, and flag when a feature genuinely needs multi-axis machining rather than defaulting to it.
